Louisiana State Police Troop F has arrested a suspect following an investigation into a hit-and-run crash that killed a child earlier this month. On October 5, 7-year-old Messiah Harris of Calhoun died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash that occurred the previous day on Louisiana Highway 151, as per the Louisiana State Police release.
Investigators identified Tony Harris, 59, as the driver of a 2011 Ford F-150 that left the roadway and struck several trees on October 4. Police reported that Messiah Harris was improperly restrained in the front passenger seat and was seriously injured. The driver reportedly fled the scene after the crash.
Tony Harris has been charged with hit-and-run driving, careless operation, failure to use a child passenger restraint system, and possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle. After a warrant was issued by the 4th Judicial District Court, he was booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center without incident.
The Louisiana State Police reminded the public that state law requires drivers involved in crashes to stop, provide identification, and assist the injured. The investigation remains ongoing as troopers continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
