A 27-year-old California man, Garrett Headrick, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for the attempted murder of his pregnant ex-wife in Surprise, Arizona. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office reported that Headrick pleaded guilty to charges including attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, and stalking in relation to the October 2024 attack.
The violent confrontation took place when Headrick, having driven from California, accosted his ex-wife and her children as they were to depart for a soccer game. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, he approached them with a metal bar, then forced them back into the house, where he proceeded to assault his ex-wife violently. This assault happened in front of the children and involved Headrick arming himself with a knife and threatening to end their lives mutually.
When law enforcement officials arrived at the scene, they discovered Headrick assaulting his ex-wife, necessitating the use of non-lethal rounds to subdue him. In a statement obtained by AZ Family, Headrick was found with his hands around his ex-wife's throat, and she was suffering from multiple injuries, including a brain bleed at the back of her head and several lacerations to her hands and neck.
Maricopa County Attorney Mitchell, reflecting on the gravity of this case, said, "Domestic violence is about power and control, and it leaves lasting scars on victims and families.
