Over the weekend, officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Francisco Area responded to an unusual call for help that involved a distressed pelican in need of rescue. According to a social media post by CHP San Francisco, the incident occurred last Saturday, when a good Samaritan spotted the bird struggling on Sierra Point Parkway in Brisbane, just off US-101 southbound.

The pelican was found to be in dire straits with a fishing hook and lure painfully embedded in its beak and left wing. CHP Officers A. Ramirez, #24535, and O. Ansel, #23357, were flagged on the scene. Officer Ramirez took the lead in comforting the pelican, providing the initial care necessary to stabilize the animal until further help could arrive. "It was determined the injured pelican was in distress caused by a fishing hook and lure that was embedded in the pelican’s beak and left wing," the CHP San Francisco's statement read.

The Peninsula Humane Society was promptly called to assist, and they responded by taking custody of the injured pelican. Their team is well-equipped to handle wildlife emergencies, and they were able to administer the appropriate medical treatment to address the pelican's injuries.
