In a move aiming to bolster the leadership of its internal watchdog, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) has promoted Deputy Director Tim Moore to the pivotal role of Chief of the Bureau of Internal Affairs, effective immediately. Superintendent Larry Snelling announced the appointment, highlighting Moore's extensive experience within the bureau, which is tasked with investigating misconduct allegations within the police force.

"He has a proven track record of conducting complete, thorough and impartial investigations, and I know he will lead the bureau with the same integrity he has displayed throughout his career," Snelling expressed, according to a press release from the department. Moore's ascendancy comes after nearly two decades of work within the Bureau of Internal Affairs, a tenure that saw him rise from Sergeant to Lieutenant, then Commander, and after retiring in 2021, he re-joined the bureau as its Deputy Director; he brings to his new role not just years within the bureau but also time served on the FBI's Anti-Corruption Taskforce from 2014 to 2020.

Chief Moore will now oversee all bureau operations, which encompasses the management of internal investigations and ensuring the department aligns with accountability reforms related to the consent decree—this significant responsibility falls on him as the bureau reaffirms its commitment to thorough and unbiased probes into its own ranks.

With a career that spans over three decades in the CPD, Chief Moore's qualifications include a master’s degree in Business Management from Saint Xavier University, and a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University; his career in the department includes stints in various divisions, such as the Area One Detective Division, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District, Moore's depth of experience promises a steadied hand at the bureau's helm, according to the CPD announcement.
