A confrontation between Chicago police and a man suspected of a series of robberies led to an officer-involved shooting in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. The incident took place near 111th and State streets, where the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) confirms the shooting happened Thursday afternoon.
According to the Chicago Police Department statement obtained by the ABC7 Chicago, the incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. when officers attempted to stop the man, whom they saw flee and identified him as carrying a handgun, they repeatedly commanded him to drop the weapon but he did not comply which resulted in one of the officers discharging their weapon, striking him in the leg and two guns were recovered from the scene.
The man, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, was subsequently transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and, according to the ABC7 Chicago report, was initially listed in good condition. In contrast, the Chicago Sun-Times cites that the man was taken to the hospital in a serious state. Additionally, two officers were taken to Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park for observation, as stated by the Chicago Fire Department.
In the wake of the shooting, a substantial police presence was noted at the scene with numerous Chicago police cruisers parked nearby, and the area was cordoned off with red and yellow crime scene tape while Chopper 7 provided aerial coverage of the ongoing police activity as per the ABC7 Chicago footage. As per procedure, the officers involved in the shooting have been assigned to administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days while COPA investigates.
