In the midst of the ongoing government shutdown, TSA agents at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago received a generous gesture of support with free meals being provided in Terminal 2—a relief effort organized by the American Federation of Government Employees Local 777, as reported by WGN-TV. Prepared by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, these meals are being offered as agents continue to work without a paycheck, making it difficult for some to cover basic expenses such as housing and groceries. The support initiative will continue into the following day, likewise offering meals in Terminal 5 at 1 p.m.
Similarly, at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, a food shelf has been set up to support federal employees during this challenging time; donations poured in on Sunday, indicating a community's recognition of the hardship brought on by the pay loss and in an interview with WCCO, Neal Gosman, a union officer with AFGE Local 899, voiced concerns about the shifting mood among TSA members—ranging from initial optimism to growing anxiety and frustration.
This humanitarian aid at MSP Airport is a repeat of the past, echoing relief efforts from a 35-day shutdown in 2019, where airport food shelves and donation sites similarly assisted workers coping without their paychecks. Second Harvest Heartland plans to extend a hand by delivering food to federal workers directly at MSP Airport this week, highlighting a collaborative effort to alleviate the strain on those who continue to ensure safety and maintain operations in transportation.
The current shutdown, which started on Oct. 1, is already recorded as the second-longest on record, impacting numerous federal employees nationwide. Gosman reminds the public, "Our job is to keep people safe to keep transportation going and that's our job," stressing the duty of the individuals in Congress and the administration to manage the country's affairs effectively and resolve the deadlock that has precipitated such widespread economic challenges for federal workers.
