A tragic crash happened in Vernon Parish on Monday, when two vehicles collided on U.S. Highway 171, leading to the death of a young child. A 2018 Ford Expedition was turning onto Barham Road when it was hit by a southbound 2004 Ford Windstar. Louisiana State Police are still investigating what led to the crash.
Early findings show that the Expedition driver failed to yield while trying to cross the median, leading to the crash. The driver had minor injuries and was wearing a seat belt. Two children in the Expedition were not wearing seat belts—a 6-year-old was moderately hurt, and a 4-year-old was seriously injured. Both were taken to the hospital quickly. The Windstar driver, who was buckled up, was not injured, according to the Louisiana State Police.
In a sorrowful update on Tuesday, authorities informed of the 4-year-old's succumbing to the injuries received in the accident, a notification that added a somber chapter to the incident's narrative. The collision has surfaced discussions on vehicle safety and the vital role seat belts play in protecting passengers. Highlighting the criticality of seat belt use, the police remarked, "the proper use of seat belts greatly reduces the risk of serious injury or death," as stated by the Louisiana State Police.
