A fatal crash in Vernon Parish on U.S. Highway 171 has resulted in the death of a child. The incident occurred on Monday and involved a 2018 Ford Expedition and a 2004 Ford Windstar. Preliminary findings indicate that the Expedition failed to yield while turning left onto Barham Road, leading to a collision around 3:39 p.m, according to the Louisiana State Police release.
The driver of the Expedition sustained minor injuries, while the Windstar driver was not hurt. Two children in the Expedition were not restrained at the time of the crash. A 6-year-old child suffered moderate injuries, and a 4-year-old child was critically injured. The younger child died from injuries the following day.
The Louisiana State Police noted that seat belt use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in vehicle crashes. Routine toxicology samples were collected as part of the investigation, which remains ongoing.
