A Claiborne County man, identified as Colby Seals, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder following a violent altercation in a Hancock County parking lot. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the scuffle took place on August 24 along Main Street in Sneedville, and Seals is alleged to have continued to strike the other man even after he had fallen unconscious, resulting in critical injuries, as reported by WVLT.
The incident came under scrutiny by TBI agents in August following a request from Third Judicial District Attorney General Dan Armstrong. In a development on the case, the Hancock County Grand Jury returned an indictment today, as noted by WATE. Seals, who has since bonded out, was originally arrested and booked on a $100,000 bond. The case seems to further shake the local community as it came to light the same day a Hancock County School Board member was also indicted on unrelated charges of soliciting a minor for sex.
Further intrigue surrounds the case, as it has been revealed by WBIR that the violent encounter was witnessed by a former chief deputy of Hancock County, who is "no longer employed" following the incident. District Attorney General Dan Armstrong told WBIR that whether the former chief deputy would be wanted for questioning or could face charges "depends on what the investigation uncovers."
Investigators have been actively looking into the circumstances that led up to the assault. Although the individuals directly involved in the assault were not deputies, the presence of the off-duty chief deputy during the episode has raised questions about law enforcement's role and conduct in the community. The TBI's investigation continues, and the findings are expected to shape the forthcoming legal processes and possibly the protocols within the Hancock County law enforcement system.
