This interdisciplinary approach didn't come out of thin air. In fact, it has been meticulously crafted to not only deeply align with faculty expertise but to also resonate with local employment trends and demands. CSU Provost Nigamanth Sridhar, who's been at the helm of this initiative, emphasized the university's commitment to responsiveness to labor market signals. "As a regional public, as an institution that seeks to serve this community, we said, what do our employers need?" Sridhar told CSU's news outlet.

The curriculum is packed with core topics in economics, calculus, and data analysis, among others. Graduates are expected to enter the workforce with proficiency in quantitative analysis and a unique versatility to thrive across various industries or in government roles. The program is also positioned as a stepping stone for those aiming to further their academic pursuits with graduate degrees in economics, finance, accounting, or even law.

Sara Froehlich, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, commented on the depth of learning that students will engage with. "Students in the Mathematics/Statistics + Economics degree will gain a foundational understanding of mathematics, statistics, and economics as they complete introductory and intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics courses, introductory statistics, econometrics, calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra," Froehlich said in a statement obtained by the CSU news. She added that the choice of upper-level courses and the capstone project are designed to enrich students' expertise even further.

The hopes for this integrated degree are clearly placed in providing adaptable and skilled professionals who can navigate and meet the evolving demands of the economy. With local employers being consulted in the process, CSU is actively trying to bridge the gap between education and employment, crafting a curriculum that's both relevant and future-proof.
