Communities in Orange Mound and nearby areas will host the second annual Hoop 2 Be Heard basketball tournament, organized by District 10 Commissioner Britney Thornton. The event will run from Tuesday to Saturday next week and include teams from five local community centers: Pine Hill, Bethel LaBelle, Glenview, Whitehaven, and Orange Mound. The five-on-five tournament will award $1,000 to each player on the championship team. Registration is available online, according to the Shelby County release.
The tournament is open to the public at no cost and will feature basketball games, local entertainment, and cultural showcases. Games will be held in the evenings, with the championship match scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Orange Mound Community Center.
Commissioner Thornton stated in the Shelby County announcement that Hoop 2 Be Heard aims to engage young adults and encourage community participation through sports.
