A vibrant addition is set to enliven the Coral Springs art scene, with a new public art installation coming to the downtown area. The city's Public Art Committee has made its pick for the next public mural, throwing its weight behind a piece by artist CJ Hungerman. Detailed in an announcement from the city, the committee sent the design over to the City Commission for final approval.
The north building of Coral Springs’ Cornerstone development, near Sample Road and University Drive, has been proposed as the site for Hungerman’s artwork. Artists and local residents alike are awaiting the City Commission’s decision, expected during their regular meeting on November 5. If approved, city staff and the artist will collaborate to finalize the project’s details.
Keeping it all in line with the city's budgetary ethos, the proposal is a steal at $38,000—way under the $75,000 set aside for such creative endeavors. "Public art has the power to breathe life into a downtown while creating a greater sense of community pride," City Commissioner Joe McHugh said, putting into words what many art advocates feel. "Our city's mural projects are a meaningful investment in our overall cultural scene, and I look forward to seeing this artist’s vision come to life," he added, per the Coral Springs announcement.
Importantly, no taxpayer money is funding the project. The Public Art Fund, supported by fees from new construction and renovations, is covering the costs. Hungerman was chosen for his national reputation and signature style, which features bold colors and patterns that create a striking, almost 3D surreal effect.
