In the quiet early hours of Thursday morning, tragedy struck on Chicago's Far North Side with a deadly conflagration at a residential building, claiming three lives and leaving several injured. WGN-TV reports that the fire erupted just before 2 a.m. at a three-story complex located at the 7000 block of North Rockwell Street in the West Ridge neighborhood. The intense flames rapidly spread to encompass the building's back porches before ravaging the interior stairwells, effectively blocking escape routes and trapping residents above the ground level.
The situation, born of an ordinary night violated by columns of fire and chaos, sent at least two, possibly three individuals plunging from their windows in a desperate attempt to avoid the encroaching blaze; their condition is deemed critical, as reported by Chicago Fire Department Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Jim McDonough. Subsequently, firefighters utilizing their ladders managed to rescue six residents from the second and third floors of the building, as per WGN-TV coverage. In the turmoil, the building's structural integrity succumbed, with the roof tragically collapsing.
CBS Chicago further details that the building, housing seven units including a garden apartment, was proclaimed fully occupied according to First District Chief McDonough. The repercussions of the fire also extended to the roads, as crews, enacting a heavy presence on the scene, necessitated the closure of Rockwell Street between Lunt Avenue and Greenleaf Avenue.
Human stories of near-misses and survival punctuate the incident, with resident Nuti Ho recounting her escape, "We couldn't get out," she stated to CBS News Chicago, "We tried to get out as quick as possible because smoke was coming all over the room." Simon Besong, another inhabitant, revealed a harrowing escape for his family: "The hallway was on fire, so we locked the door back, and then we came back to the window, and tied a bedsheet on the window, and I brought my kids down, and my wife also came down." Despite the immediate response, the search for all residents persists, hindered by the peril posed by the collapsed roof.
As of the latest updates, the identities of the three males who perished in the fire remain undisclosed, while the origins of the fire itself have yet to be established. Investigations are actively proceeding. The full enormity of the fire drew about 100 firefighters to combat the blaze and provide emergency medical assistance. The calamity's aftermath continues to unfold with authorities intently focused on piecing together the events leading up to the inferno and the precise cause that inflamed a peaceful night into a scene of devastation and loss.
