San Francisco's judicial bench has welcomed a new face with the appointment of Lianne Dumas, a seasoned Deputy City Attorney, as Judge in the San Francisco County Superior Court. Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment, which fills the gap left by the retirement of Judge Curtis E.A. Karnow. With a 13-year tenure in the legal field, Dumas has carved a niche in mental health, dependency, and child welfare law.
Heralded for her comprehensive legal acumen, especially within her work on the City Attorney's Office’s Dependency and Mental Health Team, Dumas's litigation expertise includes handling jury and bench trials under a variety of important acts and initiatives. As reported by the San Francisco City Attorney's Office, Lianne Dumas is highly celebrated; her former team expects that she will deliver justice with both fairness and compassion. Appointed just recently, the city waits to see how her reputed competencies translate from the office to the higher role of a judge.
Before her time with the City Attorney’s Office, Dumas' versatile career spanned roles at the Judicial Council of California and her own practice at LMD Legal Aid, where she tackled juvenile and criminal cases. Her academic involvement included imparting legal knowledge at the University of San Francisco and Golden Gate University Schools of Law. Dumas, originally from the rural environs of Yucaipa, California, holds a Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from California State University, Fullerton.
