A man was fatally shot by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy in Rosemead on Wednesday, after a six-hour standoff that began as a mental health call. According to ABC7, deputies responded initially to a call about a man in mental distress at a home on Sullivan Street.
The situation escalated when deputies were informed that the man inside the home was threatening to harm both himself and family members, in addition to the deputies. Lt. Daniel Vizcarra stated to NBC Los Angeles that a mental evaluation and crisis negotiation team was brought onto the scene. They discovered that the man was possibly armed, which prompted the sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau to respond. The man subsequently emerged from the house, wielding what was described as a high-powered rifle.
In a tragic culmination of events, "the male exited the house with a high-powered rifle, which led to a deputy-involved shooting," Vizcarra told reporters. These circumstances led to the shooting of the man around 11:30 p.m., as detailed in statements obtained by KTLA. The man, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It remains unclear whether the man fired at the deputies during the incident. Two other individuals, an elderly adult and a juvenile, were reported to be inside the residence at the time of the shooting but were not injured. Lt. Vizcarra confirmed that the two are family members of the deceased, although further details regarding their relationships were not provided. Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Sheriff Department's Homicide Bureau, with options for anonymity available through Crime Stoppers.
