On Friday night last week in East Brookfield, Massachusetts, firefighters responded to a serious crash after a vehicle went off the road and struck a tree at 184 West Sturbridge Road around 9:30 p.m. The vehicle caught fire with the driver trapped inside and unconscious, according to NBC Boston.
The East Brookfield Fire Department used dry chemical extinguishers to control the engine fire while working to free the driver from the wreckage. With help from the Brookfield Fire Department, rescuers completed the extrication after about 45 minutes, as reported by the Boston Globe.
The driver was airlifted to UMass Memorial Hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and the investigation is ongoing.
