Halloween is creeping up on us, and Duluth City Hall is inviting the little ghouls and boys for a festive and safe trick-or-treating experience. This Thursday, October 30, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, the corridors of local government will transform into a candy trail for the City Hall-oween event. Donning costumes, kids can roam from office to office collecting treats from city staff, including friendly faces from the Police and Fire Departments.
While the celebration aims to be inclusive and fun, Duluth City Hall has set out specific guidelines to ensure a comfortable environment for all. Costumes can't include masks or items capable of hiding identity, unless they are surgical masks for health reasons. Expect a no-fly list for violent, offensive, or gang-themed getups, as well as any attire depicting horror characters or weapons. Beyond the wardrobe, the ban extends to costumes that demean race, religion, nationality, gender, or handicap conditions.
Originally kicked off in 2019, City Hall-oween began as more than just an excuse to splurge on candy corn and fun-sized chocolates. The event seems designed to bridge the gap between local government and its constituents, starting with the youngest of them. It's about taking those often intimidating walls of bureaucracy and making them, just for a day, a little less daunting and a lot sweeter.
