In a recent event in Duluth, Minnesota, police work went beyond the standard as a K9 unit impressively tracked down a suspect who had evaded officers. After a traffic stop gone awry on 14th Avenue East and East 1st Street this past Tuesday, a police pursuit ensued when a passenger took control of the vehicle and fled the scene. The car was later found abandoned in the 200 block of East 6th Street.

According to the Duluth Police Department news release, Officer Abbott and his K9 partner, Gus, joined the search, applying their recent training in scent-specific searching to locate the fleeing individual. The skillful canine led authorities to a nearby residence where the perimeter was established and entry was made. Inside, they apprehended 39-year-old Amber Hammond.

Hammond was promptly taken to a local hospital before being transported to the St. Louis County Jail, where she is facing multiple charges, including 5th Degree Possession, Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, and Probation Violation. Her attempt to elude officers might have been successful were it not for the keen nose of K9 Gus and the coordinated efforts of the local police.

The efficient work of the Duluth Police was highlighted in the announcement of the incident, as they remarked: "Good work to Officer Abbott and K9 Gus for utilizing a recent training to locate where the individual was, as well as patrol group D for continuing to follow up and apprehend this individual." The apprehension of Hammond serves as a testament to the effectiveness of police training programs and the valuable role that K9 units play in law enforcement operations.
