In a sobering turn of events on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, a devastating multi-vehicle crash left eight people dead and resulted in two cats from Furkids Animal Rescue going missing. The incident, happening on Monday, involved a tractor-trailer reportedly following too closely and crashing into a Dodge van, triggering a horrific chain reaction, as per the Georgia State Patrol. Atlanta News First reports the crash occurred around 4:15 p.m., engulfing a van in flames and claiming the lives of seven individuals inside.
Caught in the wreckage was a Furkids transport van carrying 37 kittens for relocation to a partner shelter in Vermont. The shelter, Georgia's largest no-kill facility, noted that the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries but has been released from the hospital. Following the accident, all of the kittens fled from the vehicle. As of yesterday afternoon, Furkids confirmed that 35 of the felines had been recovered, leaving two—Birch and Strawberry Shortcake—still unaccounted for. "We are devastated for the families affected, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them," the group commented on social media, as shared by Atlanta News First.
In lighter news within this tragedy, one kitten, named Morticia, who had been severely injured with pulmonary contusions, has been receiving treatment at the University of Georgia and is on oxygen support. Furkids has shown immense gratitude for the support and immediate action of volunteers and community members in the aftermath. "In the chaos of the wreckage, cages were crushed, and cats began to flee," Furkids shared, indicating the dire situation the animals found themselves in. A team effort at a nearby truck stop ensured that many of the cats were examined by a vet who drove to the scene, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The ongoing search for the missing cats continues, and Furkids is urging public assistance. They are also seeking donations to replace their totaled van and to cover medical expenses for the injured kitten, Morticia. Contributions can be made on the Furkids website, selecting "TransFur Van Accident" from the dropdown menu. Meanwhile, the driver of the tractor-trailer has been arrested on multiple charges following the tragic incident, emphasizing the gravity of the consequences that stemmed from the crash. The shelter extends "our deepest condolences to the families affected and to everyone impacted by this devastating tragedy," as detailed in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
