Residents of El Paso witnessed another display of law enforcement diligence this past week when a traffic stop escalated into a suspect’s brief evasion. On October 18, at the 3900 block of Las Casitas Drive, a dark gray sedan was pulled over by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and, attempting to comply with the initial procedure, the driver, later identified as 24-year-old Alexis Ortega, darted from the scene shortly afterward.

The pursuit ended without drama or fanfare thanks to the investigative work of the deputies. Escaping from the traffic stop, Ortega fled home, where deputies later showed up at the 3700 block of Native Dancer Street. Making contact with the suspect, they achieved what all too often slips from grasp in this age of high-speed chases and violent confrontations: they arrested Ortega without incident.

This incident garnered some bold words from El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, who publicly addressed the chase's resolution. According to the post made by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, “If you try to evade our deputies, we will find you and hold you accountable. We won’t stop looking for those who break the law and put our community at risk.”
