El Paso's middle schoolers put rubber to the road at Nolan Richardson Middle School during the exhilarating Stars, Stripes & Spokes bike race, an event to draw the curtain on El Paso ISD's Raise the Bar program funded by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Nearly 30 students from four local middle schools showcased strength, strategy, and solidarity in pursuit of victory, but the race was more than a contest of speed; it championed lifelong fitness and fellowship among military-connected students.

In a display of true grit and tireless endeavor on Wednesday, the students tackled a series of obstacles that pushed them to their limits, and in the end, only one rode away with a brand-new bicycle, yet they all gained from the experience, the district observing its commitment to student well-being, in partnership with various community sponsors, "Raise the Bar is an initiative that promotes health and wellness for our students, and we want to remind our kids to stay active throughout their lives even after they’re done with their schooling," Nivia Bernal, Project Manager for DoDEA grant, told El Paso ISD.

The competition's top honor went to a student, a Fort Bliss Sergeant Major Academy affiliate who eyed the bike not just as a trophy but as a means of daily transit to school.

EPISD's efforts extend well beyond the race, echoing their mission to nourish the lives of their students, especially those tethered to military families who face the frequent upheaval that army life demands. These DoDEA-funded initiatives provide a stable educational environment that fosters growth and resilience, a nod to the collaborative investment in the futures of those who keep our nation secure. The district prides itself on accommodating the needs of these families and ensuring a degree of normalcy in the lives of their children, according to El Paso ISD.
