
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has confirmed an arrest in connection with a homicide investigation that commenced early October. On the morning of October 2, the discovery of 36-year-old Juan Oscar Becerra's body at a home on the 12800 block of Barstow Avenue precipitated an urgent response from law enforcement officials.
According to a social media post by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, deputies were confronted with clear signs of foul play at the scene. The case quickly accelerated as the Major Crimes Unit took the reins. Officers worked meticulously to piece together the circumstances that culminated in Becerra's untimely demise, eventually narrowing in to identify Leopoldo Ortega, aged 25, as the prime suspect. A warrant was to swiftly be obtained for Ortega's arrest, charging him with one count of Murder.
In what culminated in a collaborative law enforcement effort, Ortega was apprehended on October 16 in the 7400 block of Cimarron Market Avenue. The arrest was made possible by the combined capabilities of the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, which includes agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Anthony Police Department, the Texas Office of Inspector General, Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
