The 7th Annual Sun City Portfolio Day recently provided a vibrant platform for young artists across the El Paso region to exhibit their creative flair to a multitude of higher education institutions. The event, which was open to students from public, private, charter, and homeschool backgrounds, was a significant opportunity for those aiming to secure a place in college art programs. According to EPCC News, the day featured participation from Clint and Canutillo Independent School Districts for the first time, alongside stalwart participants El Paso ISD, Socorro ISD, Ysleta ISD, and El Paso Community College (EPCC).

In its inception, the event began modestly with three colleges and 30 students, but has since seen a dramatic expansion. This year, 28 colleges and universities from across the United States, and as far as Scotland, were represented. Over 500 students took part, presenting their artwork both in-person and virtually. "It started with three colleges and 30 students," Candice Printz, Sun City Portfolio Day Co-Director, told EPCC News. She noted the impressive growth when compared to the National Portfolio Day in Albuquerque, which draws in 11 colleges and about 100 students.

Local students expressed their enthusiasm and ambition tied to the event. Mountain View High School senior Nia Avalos eagerly shared her sentiment with EPCC News, "What excites me is that I get to meet the different colleges that have Art, and I love showing off my work, since I put a lot of time into it." She is particularly keen on institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin and UT San Antonio. Vanessa Vasquez, a fellow senior from Parkland High School, expressed her passion for travel and art study, highlighting the value of the event in exploring varied educational opportunities.
