On a late-night call on Wednesday, El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched on a report of a domestic violence incident where the suspect was having a mental health crisis and had a firearm. The call, which came just before the stroke of midnight, described a man threatening self-harm if law enforcement were to show up. The caller, who said they were assaulted, managed to secure themselves along with two children inside the residence while the male suspect remained outside with the weapon.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office, in a statement, detailed deputies arriving on scene to set up containment and make attempts to reach the suspect by telephone. Eventually, Robert-Anthony King, 29, tried to force his way back into the home, an effort thwarted by the authorities. After locating King outside, the deputies were able to convince him to surrender, ending the standoff without further incident. However, this arrest was not merely a byproduct of a troubled mind at its breaking point, but also the intersection of criminal deeds and the accountability that must follow.
King faced numerous charges after being taken into custody, including domestic violence, second-degree kidnapping, attempted second-degree assault, third-degree assault, harassment, criminal mischief, criminal tampering, and prohibited use of a weapon. Following the ordeal, "This incident highlights the difficult balance my deputies must maintain when responding to calls involving both a mental health crisis and criminal behavior," Sheriff Joseph Roybal said, as obtained by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. The suspect was booked into the El Paso County Jail and held on a $10,000 bond, a point in time where the judicial system takes over the narrative of a man's fate.
