Get ready for a blend of history and Halloween festivities at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. On October 25, families can head over to Coles County for a torchlight Halloween hike and wiener roast. From 5 to 8 p.m., visitors can wander along paths lit by the soft glow of torches, partaking in a night of bonfires, music, and spooky stories.
The event, designed with youngsters in mind, promises not to spook too much while delivering an enjoyable evening for all. Along the journey, roving volunteers decked out in period garb and gentle ghost makeup will engage with guests. According to information from the Illinois government website, while strolling through the mixed terrain, appropriate footwear and warm seasonal wear are recommended, so all can stay cozy and safe while they mingle and celebrate the seasonal charm outdoors — rain or shine.
Besides the atmospheric hike, the event shines a spotlight on autumnal treats. Hot dogs, cider, and s'mores ingredients will be sold by the Lincoln Log Cabin Foundation volunteers. Toasting marshmallows over an open flame becomes a night to remember while supporting educational programs at the historic site. All proceeds from these sales will funnel back into crafting further educational and interpretive experiences.
Located at 402 S. Lincoln Highway in Lerna, the Lincoln Log Cabin site is more than just a location for community festivities. It's an important cultural touchstone that provides a window into the world of Abraham Lincoln’s father and stepmother during the 1840s. As one of the 400 locations managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the cabin site stands within the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area. Celebrating its centennial year, the IDNR has been a steward of the state's natural and historical sites since 1925 and offers diverse services encompassing state park and historic site management, natural resource conservation, and public recreational opportunities.
