Motorists in northwest Louisiana will soon notice more flashing yellow arrows at intersections as the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) continues traffic signal upgrades across several parishes, including Caddo, Bossier, Claiborne, DeSoto, Red River, and Webster. According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the installation of flashing yellow left-turn arrows (FYA) is part of Phases 1, 2, and 3 of an ongoing statewide project to improve traffic flow and reduce delays.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development explained that when drivers see a flashing yellow arrow, they must yield to oncoming traffic before making a left turn. This system allows more opportunities for left turns when traffic is light while maintaining safety by requiring drivers to wait for a safe gap in oncoming vehicles.
To help motorists understand the new signals, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has released an instructional video demonstrating how FYAs work. The department also confirmed that the upgrade will eventually extend to all state-maintained traffic signals across Louisiana where protected left turns are allowed, in compliance with federal requirements.
