Florida's academic streets may soon take on a new name in auditoriums across the state if legislation proposed by Republican lawmakers passes, a monumental nod to the late Charlie Kirk, the conservative figure known for his sharp commentary and political activism. State Rep. Kevin Steele, a figure fresh in the Floridian legislative landscape since 2022, has put forth House Bill 113 with the aim of installing Kirk's namesake on the roads of public institutes of higher learning, as reported by CBS News Miami.
Laying out a framework that would bind funding to the compliance of universities and colleges, the bill, if brought into law, will see the Florida Legislature withholding dollars should these institutions not deliver on the renaming Steele although a newcomer to the political fray holds positions such as vice chair of the House Information Technology Budget & Policy Subcommittee and expressed, "My goal with this bill is to continue his [Kirk's] legacy through generations of students that will attend our schools and will be faced with many differing ideas," in a statement captured by CBS News Miami.
Under this bill, campuses from the University of South Florida to State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota are expected to rechristen their campus thoroughfares with names such as Charlie James Kirk Drive and Charlie James Kirk Avenue, as detailed by WFLA, a change that is not merely symbolic but is mandated through the threat of fiscal withdrawal from the very lifeline of educational institutions.
In an addition to the bill names won't be the only legacy of Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a political figure with deep ties to the Trump administration, who's remembered for his campus debates and social media presence, was taking this legacy across the country before his untimely death at a speaking event last month in Utah the bill asserts a swift implementation, mandating a 90-day window for adherence upon its potential enactment, "State funds shall be withheld from any state university or Florida College System institution whose board of trustees fails to redesignate the roadway or portion of a roadway," as per the legislative text obtained by WFLA.
The move by Rep. Steele is paralleled by another bill, filed by State Rep. Juan Porras, R-Miami, last month detailing similar intentions, aspiring to see a segment near Florida International University christened as "Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue," which if passed, would come into effect on July 1, 2026, hinting at a statewide effort to cement Kirk’s controversial legacy on university pavements and within the student community for years to come.
