The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Atlanta and resulted in the death of 44-year-old Linton Blackwell of Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation began its inquiry at the request of the Atlanta Police Department.

According to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation press release, the incident happened late at night last Saturday. An off-duty Atlanta Police officer working nearby responded to a verbal altercation involving Blackwell on Irby Avenue NW and Caine Hill Place NW. The officer made contact with Blackwell, who walked toward a parking area behind a local business.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that Blackwell entered a car and appeared to place an item in his back, leading the officer to issue commands related to a firearm. The officer then discharged their weapon, striking Blackwell.

After the shooting, multiple officers provided medical aid, but Blackwell was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered at the location.

The GBI’s investigation will review all details of the incident, including what occurred in the moments before the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
