At the request of the Cobb County Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in to review a use of force incident that resulted in the death of a Dallas, Georgia man. Timothy Lyle Sheats, 47, lost his life in the encounter, which had no officers injured, according to a GBI press release.
Based on the preliminary information gathered, the incident unfolded on the evening of October 21, when Cobb County PD officers responded to a call concerning a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident at around 6:10 p.m. The officers confronted Sheats walking down the roadway. Although he claimed to have been shot, there were no visible injuries. Despite this, The officer requested Sheats to enter his patrol car for safety reasons, which Sheats refused. He proceeded to walk into traffic and attempted to enter a passing vehicle. In an effort to control the situation and prevent any harm, the responding officer deployed a taser on Sheats.
With the aid of additional officers, Sheats was secured but became unresponsive thereafter. Emergency medical services, upon arrival, evaluated him and subsequently rushed him to a local hospital. Unfortunately, Sheats was later pronounced dead. As the community awaits answers, the GBI is continuing its investigation into the intricate details of what occurred between Sheats and the officers.
The results of the investigation, when finalized, will be passed on to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office for a thorough review.
