The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the helm in scrutinizing an officer-involved shooting in Vidalia, which pitched a 47-year-old man into the harrows of critical condition. This came after local police asked for their help, highlighting the seriousness of the incident and the need to understand how a routine traffic stop turned violent yesterday afternoon.
According to a press release from the GBI, officers from the Vidalia Police Department pulled over a vehicle at the crossroads of MLK Jr. Boulevard and Epstein Street, soon unraveling that the passenger, identified as Travis Kelly Parrish of Lyons, GA, was wanted on an outstanding warrant. The events, unfolding rapidly as one officer attempted to subdue Parrish with a Taser, culminated in shots fired, and Parrish wounded amidst the fracas.
Emergency services rushed Parrish to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The officers involved were not physically hurt. The GBI is now leading an independent investigation into the shooting, examining every action that turned a Toombs County street into a scene calling for accountability.
The GBI continues its investigation to piece together a clear account of what happened. Once the independent review is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further evaluation. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward by contacting the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Eastman or by submitting anonymous tips through the agency’s hotline, website, or the See Something, Send Something app.
