Georgia State Representative Mandi Ballinger has passed away after a long battle with cancer. The Canton Republican served as Chair of the Judiciary Juvenile Committee and was known for her work on issues affecting children and survivors of domestic violence, as 11 Alive reported. Her death was confirmed yesterday.

Speaker of the House Jon Burns said Ballinger was a strong advocate for children and families. Governor Brian Kemp also expressed condolences, describing her as a respected leader across party lines.

Ballinger represented Georgia’s 23rd District, which includes Canton. She was married to State Court Judge Allen Morris and was the mother of one son, Henry.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Ballinger played a key role in advancing the state’s campus carry legislation, introducing the 2017 bill that allowed permit holders to carry firearms on college campuses after earlier versions were vetoed.
