Gilroy Police Department's efforts to halt a high-speed chase involving a stolen truck over the weekend culminated in an arrest. According to an Instagram post by the Gilroy Police Department, the incident began last Saturday when an officer spotted the stolen vehicle on Murray Avenue and attempted to pull it over. The suspect, however, chose to flee, and a brief pursuit on Highway 101 ensued before being called off for safety reasons.
Despite the end of the chase, the mayhem continued as the truck barreled off the highway near the Monterey exit, causing havoc when it plowed through a tent with two people inside. "Our officer immediately pulled over to the tent and found the two victims inside and began providing medial aid," detailed the Gilroy Police Department's social media update. Fortunately, the victims were later discharged from a regional hospital without life-threatening injuries.
Investigators quickly arrived at the scene where the truck was found abandoned on Obata Court. A diligent witness described the suspect, which aided in establishing a perimeter by the combined forces of the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. The search didn't last long; the suspect was found and apprehended hiding at a truck stop nearby.
The suspect, identified as Danny Martinez of Hollister, is now facing multiple charges. He was booked on suspicion of having a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding police officers, along with assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence of narcotics or drugs.
