Drivers in Guilford County can expect delays and detours on Interstate 40 due to a new guardrail installation project. The N.C. Department of Transportation announced that ramp and lane closures will begin tonight, weather permitting, and will occur during nighttime hours.
The U.S. 220 North ramp to I-40 East at Exit 81 and the I-40 East ramp to U.S. 29 South at Exit 219 will be closed from 8 p.m. today until 6 a.m. the following morning. Additionally, the left lane of I-40 West at mile marker 219 is scheduled to close starting at 8 p.m. tomorrow and reopen by 6 a.m. the next day, also depending on weather conditions.
Traffic through this construction area will experience delays due to alternate routes. Drivers using the U.S. 220 North Exit 81 will be redirected onto I-40 West to Exit 217, then onto Gate City Boulevard before rejoining I-40 East. Those traveling to U.S. 29 South via I-40 East Exit 219 will be guided to Exit 221, then turn right onto South Elm-Eugene, followed by another right onto I-85 South, which connects to U.S. 29 South.
The department advises drivers to proceed cautiously through the alternate routes and watch for construction crews. These changes may result in longer travel times as new guardrails are installed. Updates and more information about the closures are available on the N.C. Department of Transportation's website.
