Hancock County schools are set to beef up their security measures with an injection of $305,000 in state funds, dedicated specifically for safety upgrades. This financial aid arrives courtesy of the Secured School Safety Grant Program, as confirmed by area lawmakers committed to bolstering student protection. According to Indiana House Republicans, this is part of a substantial $27 million investment in school safety, which benefits 494 schools throughout the state.
State Rep. Chris Jeter from Fishers highlighted the community's commitment to student safety by stating, "Our community has always prioritized the well-being of students,"—an ethos reflected in the grant's aim to equip educators with necessary safety maintenance tools, as mentioned on the Indiana House Republicans website. Area schools on the receiving end of these grants include Eastern Hancock County Community School Corp. with $28,096, Greenfield-Central Community Schools with $92,500, Mt. Vernon Community School Corp. with a likewise allotment of $92,500, and $92,500 heading to New Palestine Community Schools. Despite the focus on enhanced safety measures, the specific applications of the grant span a wide spectrum of security needs.
Furthermore, notably legislator Rep. Cory Criswell from Middletown said awarded funds have the flexibility to cover expenses across several domains such as supporting resource officers, acquiring state-of-the-art equipment and technology, instituting active event warning systems, conducting threat assessments, and developing student-parent support service programs. "Every dollar invested into school safety is an investment in our children’s future," Criswell told Indiana House Republicans, emphasizing the grants' role in fostering a secure and conducive learning environment.
Rep. Ethan Lawson of Greenfield pointed out the essential, ever-evolving nature of school safety. "Safety risks can evolve, and our schools need the adequate tools to adapt," Lawson said as per the Indiana House Republicans website. He reminded the public that Indiana has committed over $214 million since 2013 toward enhancing school security via state matching grants.
