A harrowing scene unfolded as a blaze took hold of a New Bedford home, leading to the dramatic rescue of a tenant and the displacement of several occupants. The New Bedford Fire Department reported on social media that they had received numerous emergency calls just after 8:30pm regarding a fire at 396-398 Elm St. Swift action saw Engine 1 arriving promptly, only to be met with flames erupting from the second floor and heavy smoke billowing from the residence.
Firefighters faced a dire situation as reports indicated individuals were trapped on the higher levels of the building. As Engine 1 battled the flames on the second floor, their counterparts in Engine 7 and Ladder 1 conducted an urgent rescue operation. The teams worked to scale the house with ground ladders, racing against time to reach those in peril above. The fire department's initiatives expanded with Engine 6 and Ladder 3 fortifying suppression efforts and search operations. An additional call for manpower from Engine 8 punctuated the intense response to the unfolding crisis, the mobile cascade system was deployed to sustain the firefighters' air supplies as they pressed on in their mission.
The strenuous efforts of the crews culminated in the rescue of the third-floor tenant, who was extracted through the interior stairwell in a critical state. According to the department's post, the individual was swiftly transported to St. Luke’s Hospital by New Bedford EMS, where they remain under treatment for serious injuries. The fire's aftermath saw 11 tenants facing displacement, their homes consumed in the calamity. They were not left to navigate the aftermath alone, however, as New Bedford Emergency Management and the American Red Cross stepped in to offer much-needed assistance.
The New Bedford Police Department and the Providence canteen contributed their support in managing the incident. While the physical flames have been extinguished, the search for answers as to their origin persists. The New Bedford Fire Investigation Unit, together with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, are currently examining the ashes and debris, their investigation ongoing in hopes of uncovering the catalyst for the tragedy.
