A 21-year-old Hialeah man, Kevin Brito Rios, is now facing charges for vehicular homicide after police say his reckless driving led to a deadly head-on collision. NBC6 South Florida News reports that the crash occurred just before 9 p.m. Monday near W. 20th Avenue and W. 76th Street. As per an arrest report, Brito Rios was seen speeding at 80 mph in a 30 mph zone by local law enforcement before the incident unfolded.

Shortly before the crash, an officer clocked Brito Rios' 2022 Toyota Supra traveling at the excessive speed and attempted to pursue, as noted in the arrest report. According to Local 10 News, during the chase, Brito Rios was observed dangerously weaving through traffic, overtaking other motorists, and entering an oncoming lane, all behaviors indicative of his recklessness. Running into oncoming traffic, the officer tried to follow the vehicle but lost sight of it.

The pursuit led to Brito Rios failing to negotiate a curve, resulting in his vehicle crossing into the opposite lane where it collided head-on with a Ford Mustang. The driver and passenger of the Mustang were immediately transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to their injuries the following day.

Vehicle data extracted from the Mustang pinned the minimum speed of Brito Rios' vehicle at 54 mph in the moments before impact, despite being in a 35 mph zone, notes the arrest report. Remaining at the scene after the accident, Brito Rios was subsequently arrested at his apartment by Hialeah police. He is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with his bond status to be decided, as of today.
