Responding swiftly to a high-stress incident, IMPD robbery detectives apprehended a man in connection with a recent armed carjacking incident. The suspect, a 19-year-old identified as Steven Baker III, allegedly played a pivotal role in the crime, which occurred in the 3200 block of North Central Avenue. IMPD News shared an update outlining the sequence of events leading to his rapid arrest.
The series of events unfolded on the night of September 29, when the IMPD North District officers were called to the scene just after 11:00 p.m., where they encountered an adult female victim. According to her report, she was held at gunpoint and forcefully deprived of her vehicle keys. The victim provided a suspect description, which allowed officers to almost immediately begin to search for the stolen vehicle and suspect. Less than two hours later, a combination of coordination and quick action led officers to respond to a vehicle crash involving the stolen car near the intersection of E. 16th Street and Alabama Street.
Witness accounts were integral to the suspect's apprehension; individuals at the crash scene recognized Baker as he attempted to flee from the crashed vehicle. With this information, officers were able to locate and detain him for further questioning. As the investigation progressed, Baker faced preliminary charges including armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. IMPD News detailed that an arrest does not equate to a conviction, and Baker is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty in a court of law. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) has the responsibility to ultimately decide on the final charges.
The case, recorded under number IP250085767, will likely continue to unfold as the Prosecutor's Office reviews evidence and makes a determination on how to proceed. Until then, Baker and all parties involved remain ensnared in the legal process, with the next steps yet to be defined clearly.
