This morning, the San Jose Police Department responded to a call regarding a family disturbance at a South Buena Vista Avenue residence. Upon arrival, they encountered a naked man who was exhibiting erratic behavior. This man was reportedly having a drug overdose based on an earlier call from within the same unit, according to a press release by the San Jose Police Department.
The officers on the scene detained the individual as a necessary action given the circumstances, but shortly thereafter, he began to have a medical emergency. The officers acted by summoning paramedics and administering life-saving measures until the man was taken to a local hospital, where, sadly, he was pronounced dead. The identity of the deceased has yet to be made public, pending notification of next of kin by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
In light of this tragedy, a joint investigation into the in-custody death is being led by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office along with the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit. These proceedings are being observed by several oversight entities, including the San José Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor, as this is standard practice in such cases.
The authorities are calling on the community for further information, which may shed light on the events leading up to the man's death, with the San José Police Department’s Homicide Unit opening a hotline at 408-277-5283 for any leads.
