Investigations are underway following the deaths of three inmates at MCI-Norfolk, a Massachusetts prison, as confirmed today by the Department of Correction. There is currently no suspicion of foul play in these cases. A DOC spokesperson stated that the first incident was reported at approximately 1 a.m. on Sept. 20, followed by the second at around 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 27, and the last one occurred near 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 20, as reported by WCVB.
The prison staff reportedly administered first aid and summoned 911 in each instance, but despite their efforts, all inmates were pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. In a statement obtained by WCVB, the DOC spokesperson mentioned, "Our staff responded immediately in each instance and worked alongside emergency responders to provide life-saving measures." They added that it is premature to speculate on the cause and manner of death before the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner makes a determination.
MCI-Norfolk, being the state's largest medium-security facility, has now come under scrutiny. The Massachusetts Department of Correction mentioned that comprehensive mental health and substance use services are available to the incarcerated individuals, in partnership with Vital Core Health Strategies, as detailed in a statement provided to NBC Boston. However, specifics regarding the incidents or the nature of the medical emergencies have not been disclosed.
State Police Detectives assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Correction are jointly investigating the deaths. None of the deceased inmates have been identified publicly yet, as per the policy of the DOC. The DOC remains deeply committed to ensuring incarcerated individuals have access to necessary services, stated a DOC spokesperson, with the ongoing investigation, according to NBC Boston.
