Ireland-based fintech startup Wayflyer has set its sights on Charlotte, North Carolina, for its U.S. headquarters, a decision that underscores the city's stature as an emerging financial technology nexus. CEO and co-founder Aidan Corbett credited Charlotte's robust financial environment, abundant talent, and university connections as pivotal factors in their choice, as per a statement obtained by the City of Charlotte's official news.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles expressed the city's pride in welcoming Wayflyer to the fold, noting that their focus on empowering consumer brands dovetails with the local entrepreneurial ethos. The company is expected to generate roughly 20 new positions in Charlotte in areas like sales, customer success, and underwriting, in the current year, while already having funneled over $60 million into North Carolina-based businesses.

Described as a vote of confidence in North Carolina's burgeoning fintech scene, Wayflyer's expansion has been hailed as a boon for regional economic growth and international business connections. "Wayflyer’s announcement demonstrates that Mecklenburg County remains a strong anchor for fintech and international business," said Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chair Mark Jerrell, highlighting the anticipated opportunities for the local workforce and economy as reported by the City of Charlotte.

Several partners collaborated to bring the project to fruition, including the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) and, Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, among others. R. John Young, chair of the IABA North Carolina, also weighed in on Wayflyer's move. He stated that it fortifies the business bridge between Ireland and North Carolina and signals the state's position as a global innovation hub.

Since its inception in 2020, Wayflyer has ascended rapidly, deploying over $5 billion in working capital to thousands of customer brands in numerous countries. Such growth has not gone unnoticed, with the firm recently earning accolades from CNBC as a top fintech firm for 2025 and from Deloitte as one of the fastest-growing startups in 2024. With an already established office in New York City, this further expansion into Charlotte consolidates Wayflyer’s aim to build a stronger foothold in the American market.
