In a sudden turn of events, Jason Banegas, the man charged with the 2021 shooting of Hollywood Police Officer Yandy Chirino, entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder among other charges today. The plea was entered during what was the fifth day of jury selection for his trial, effectively cancelling the need for a trial to determine guilt. As per CBS News Miami, the 22-year-old faced a total of 10 charges, including armed burglary, resisting arrest with violence, grand theft firearm, and carrying a concealed firearm.
Although Banegas's trial for the criminal charges will no longer proceed, jury selection for the penalty phase is expected to begin in mid-November, as he could receive the death penalty. The minimum sentence for the charges is life in prison. Hollywood Police Chief Jeffrey Devlin described the period since Chirino's death, "It's been a long, painful four years, for the Chirino family, for the police department and our community," as reported by NBC Miami.
Officer Chirino was responding to a call regarding a "suspicious incident" on Oct. 17, 2021, when he encountered Banegas. According to authorities, a scuffle ensued, during which Banegas, who was armed, allegedly shot Chirino in the face. Chirino, who had joined the Hollywood Police Department in 2017, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital, marking the first instance a Hollywood officer was fatally shot in the line of duty since 1982.
The case has drawn significant attention, in part due to Banegas's initial claim that he had intended to kill himself, feeling "disrespected" by Officer Chirino, and not the officer when the gun discharged during their confrontation. This statement was made while Banegas was on probation for prior burglary and drug charges.
