A disturbing incident unfolded at a Knoxville Kroger store's parking lot when a woman was arrested for striking a child in the face. Court records obtained by WVLT reveal that witnesses observed 29-year-old Loren Whaley allegedly "drag" the child into a car and hit him twice with a closed fist. When initially spoken to by officers, the child seemed hesitant but later pointed out the area of impact on his face, which was visibly red.
Upon further investigation, it was noted that the child also had dried blood on his shorts and leg, alongside a red mark on his arm, per court records cited by WIVK. The reports suggest an unsettling scene, where the child at first claimed to only have a nosebleed before disclosing the abuse. Meanwhile, Whaley did not explain the events, repeatedly mentioning her need to "get her phone" when questioned by the authorities.
Further adding to the narrative, WBIR confirms that the police were called to the scene around 7 PM after receiving reports of the assault. A witness account detailed Whaley pulling the child by the arm into a white car before the punching occurred. The sight of Whaley washing her hands with a water bottle while sitting in the driver's seat was notably evident when officers approached her for questioning regarding the upsetting event.
After the confrontation, the child was safely released to his mother. While the nature of the relationship between Whaley and the child remains unclear, the seriousness of the charges against Whaley is evident. She was booked into the Knox County Jail and is expected to appear in court on Monday morning.
