Las Crucens have the opportunity to safely discard their old meds this weekend, as local law enforcement teams up with the DEA for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The City of Las Cruces notes that the event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Across various locations in the community, residents can dispose of prescription drugs with no cost, and with the assurance of anonymity.
Participating locations include well-known commercial spaces and local government buildings from Sam’s Club at 2711 N. Telshor Blvd., to the seemingly incongruous Hatch Police Department, amidst, others. All locales are preparing for an inflow of pills, tablets, and other solid-form prescriptions. However, participants should keep syrups in their original, tightly sealed containers. Not everything cuts; syringes, sharps, and illicit substances are barred from this particular civic ritual.
The principle behind the day is simple: unused prescriptions can pose a severe risk if left to linger in one's home. These pose issues of misuse or abuse, not to mention the environmental hazards that come with less responsible disposal methods.
