In a significant move to address Las Cruces' senior housing crisis, New Mexico officials inaugurated Pedrena Senior Living Apartments earlier this week. According to the City of Las Cruces, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Mayor Eric Enriquez were present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, September 30. The $26.5 million development brings 80 new units to seniors aged 55 and up, amid a backdrop of increasing homelessness among the age group.
Statistics from the HUD's 2024 data show that adults aged 55 and older now account for about 20% of the homeless population on a nightly basis, with nearly half remaining unsheltered. Financial strains caused by fixed incomes, alongside rising housing costs and a shortage of affordable senior housing, have pushed many into precarious situations. The Pedrena development, strategically located at the intersection of East Farney Lane and El Paseo Rd, offers a solution with a suite of amenities, including a fitness room, dog park, and a business center.
"By 2030, New Mexico is projected to be the state with fourth highest percentage of people over age 65 in the nation, and this group is particularly vulnerable to housing instability," Sarita Nair, Cabinet Secretary for the NM Department of Workforce Solutions, said, according to the City of Las Cruces. She underscored the significance of such developments that aim to provide safe and stable living arrangements for this vulnerable population.
Mayor Enriquez acknowledged the broad coalition of city entities, developers, and other organizations required for the project's success, stating, "It takes a team, and we have a great team in Las Cruces. We are proud of this project and the impact it will make to improve quality of life for seniors in our community," as per City of Las Cruces. Rapid occupancy rates corroborate the demand: Thomas Development Co. has reported receiving a flurry of calls even before completion, with 70 of the 80 available units claimed by eager residents, as mentioned in the city's statement.
