Last Thursday's morning commute proved a costly affair for several Las Cruces drivers, as the city's Police Department Traffic Unit went to work and handed out a total of 61 traffic citations in just one hour. The enforcement sting took place along Main Street, a busy thoroughfare that stretches from Picacho Avenue all the way to Interstate-25, and commenced at the crack of 7:30 a.m.
According to the City of Las Cruces, the majority of the citations, 23 to be exact, were given to drivers daring to exceed the posted speed limits. Fifteen individuals were cited for the offense of operating a vehicle without proper registration, and 12 others fell afoul for lacking proof of insurance. It seems the police were determined to firmly remind motorists to strictly follow the rules of the road.
The citations collected on that day weren't solely for high-speed transgressions. Noteworthy among the other violations were assorted traffic offenses, including driving without a valid license, the ignoring of red lights, and failing to properly restrain children in the vehicle. With such a variety of infractions, the message was clear: adherence to traffic laws is not optional.
