The streets of Las Cruces witnessed a stringent clampdown on traffic violations this Thursday, as the local Police Department's Traffic Unit went into overdrive, issuing a slew of citations in a focused one-hour enforcement operation. According to the City of Las Cruces, officers were out in force along North Main Street and Elks Drive starting at 7:30 a.m., targeting a range of offenses from speeding to improper vehicle registration.
The total tally of citations handed out to drivers stood at 82, with a significant number, 37, cited for pushing past the posted speed limit. Another 20 found themselves on the receiving end for operating a vehicle without the proper registration, and 17 were flagged for lacking proof of insurance, a mandatory requirement for all motorists. These numbers paint a picture of an operation that was far from just an admonitory gesture, but a concerted effort to enforce the rules of the road.
Apart from the primary infractions, the Traffic Unit also dealt with a variety of other violations. In the mix were instances of driving without a license, being distracted at the wheel by a cell phone, and vehicles sporting improper windshield tint. Each of these actions carries its own degree of risk, and the Las Cruces Police Department seems determined to remind drivers that there are consequences for flouting the law.
