In Lawton, Oklahoma, a new colorful crosswalk has been installed near Hugh Bish Elementary School to improve pedestrian safety. The City of Lawton announced the project’s completion on its website, noting that construction began earlier this month and was finished during the school’s Fall Break.
The crosswalk is designed to help students and families cross safely while encouraging drivers to slow down and stay alert in the school zone, according to the City of Lawton's statement.
The project was a collaboration between several city departments and community groups. The Streets Division handled construction and street improvements, while the Arts & Humanities Division added the artistic design. The Lawton Enhancement Trust Authority funded the painting supplies and design costs, and Lawton Public Schools provided input on the location and layout.
City officials plan to monitor the crosswalk over the next one to two years to assess how it withstands weather and traffic conditions. The results may guide future crosswalk projects in other school zones.
