The efforts of the Lebanon Police Department (LPD) recently culminated in the disruption of what they identified as a "nationwide retail theft operation," with the arrest of two Canadian citizens, as detailed by WSMV. Information from neighboring law enforcement agencies ignited an investigation by LPD crime analysts into the group's presence in the region, with a license plate reader confirming the suspects' vehicle was in Lebanon last Tuesday.
This update prompted an increased surveillance on local hardware stores that led to the discovery of the suspects in a Lowe's parking lot on South Cumberland Street, whereupon officers detained two individuals, according to a WKRN report. Investigation revealed the theft of approximately $1,000 worth of electronic locks from the store and the possession of a specialized purse designed to elude security sensors by the 35-year-old female suspect, they were from Ontario, Canada, a revelation that added an international angle to the criminal activities, which had involved similar thefts throughout the United States.
The two suspects arrested in the sting — a 35-year-old woman with a sensor-blocking purse, and a 33-year-old man — are believed to have been part of a shoplifting spree targeting hardware stores down the country's spine, as stated in an LPD social media post shared via their official channel. The report underscores the importance of interagency cooperation, which brought to light that the suspects had crossed into the U.S. only days before their capture in Lebanon.
