Yesterday afternoon of October 16, Louisiana State Police were called in to investigate a deputy-involved shooting in Assumption Parish. The incident unfolded shortly before 4:00 p.m. in the 500 block of Bayou Drive, according to officials. An initial report from the scene indicated that deputies had been responding to a shooting at a local residence, where one individual had already been struck.
As events unfolded, an exchange of gunfire ensued, leading a subject to be seriously injured and subsequently transported to the hospital. A deputy also sustained minor injuries but was treated on scene. Details surrounding the shooting are still emerging as Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division – Houma Field Office detectives continue to thoroughly process the scene and actively gather further information.
The authorities are appealing to the public for any additional information that could aid in the investigation. "Anyone with information and/or pictures and video is urged to share that information with LSP Detectives," the Louisiana State Police statement encouraged. This incident has become yet another in a string of deputy-involved shootings, which are increasingly coming under scrutiny. The need for police transparency and accountability is as pressing as it has ever been.
