LSU Football has dismissed head coach Brian Kelly following a 49-25 loss to Texas A&M and appointed Frank Wilson as interim head coach. The university faces a $54 million buyout for Kelly, one of the largest severance agreements in college football history, according to NOLA.com.
Wilson, a New Orleans native, has prior experience as LSU’s associate head coach and running backs coach under Kelly since 2022. He previously served as head coach at Texas-San Antonio and McNeese, holding a 26-40 career record. As AL.com reported, Wilson is also recognized for his recruiting background, having brought players such as Leonard Fournette and Odell Beckham Jr. to LSU during an earlier tenure.
According to WWLTV, sports commentator Matt Moscona described Wilson as a fitting choice to guide the team through the transition and maintain stability among players and recruits. Wilson’s first major test as interim coach will come on at Saturday next week, when LSU faces Alabama. Both teams are using their open dates to prepare for the upcoming matchup.
